Job v/s Career: Following Your Passion

A job and a career, although related, are not always the same thing. In fact, there are numerous differences between one’s job and their career. However, the most fundamental difference between the two is your attitude towards them. A job may simply be a task, or a set of tasks, that fills your pocket and gives you a sense of employment. A career, on the other hand, is a set of jobs, skills, experiences that you gather over a period, in order to achieve your cherished goals in a particular field of work.

Every success story in the world has a few common basics. Most fundamental of them being, following your passion. If you’re not doing something you love from the bottom of your heart, there will come a day, 10 or 20 or 30 years from now, when you will question all your life choices that eventually led you to being stuck in a boring, monotonous, only-for-paychecks job. Following your passion may seem like a scary prospect, but the results are more than just satisfactory.

Walt Disney was a boy of eleven when he sold his first piece of art to a neighbour. An early passion for art recognized, he began making extra money by selling his paintings and in the process, honing his skills. Soon he joined an art and photography school to see where his passion would take him. Post that, his struggle was real. Declaring bankruptcy of his own venture Laugh-O-Grams, moving to Hollywood with $20 in his pocket, delivering one failure after other, Walt saw it all. Cut to present, 94 years since The Walt Disney Company was established, it is now a household name, has its own series of channels and amusement parks around the globe, and holds assets over $92 billion.

“Do what you love and the money will follow.” Your passion should be the foundation stone for your career opportunities. Invest time and resources into formulating and implementing a plan of action that sets you on the path your heart desires. Do not be afraid to take risks, because every little setback is a lesson in itself. Hardly anyone has ever achieved success in the first try, remember the story of the king and the spider who just wouldn’t quit? Maintain a positive attitude; even though the path to success may be rickety, in the end, the fulfillment you get by doing something you love and getting paid for it, will all be worth the efforts. If you wish to be an actor, take a class. Participate in plays, make yourself known while honing your kill set. Make sure all your time, energy and other resources are invested in helping you grow as an actor and you will see yourself landing an acting job here and a gig there. Perseverance is the key to achieving anything that is worth the while in one’s life.
