Database, an important asset for almost every business, eases performing a number of tasks if managed effectively. You know what, when one hears the word Database Management, the first word that a strike in the mind is Oracle. This is because it is one of the most common and simplest solutions for secure maintenance of mass database by companies.
Yes, now one person will be on your mind, Oracle’s Founder, Larry. Am I right? Of course, yes. So, let me tell you more about Larry, or Lawrence Joseph Ellison. Well, you might be surprised to know that Ellison was a college dropout twice, before he built Oracle, one of the world’s most innovative tech brands. His company specializes in database technology which solves the issues of reluctance in the databases of the companies. He has been listed among the top 10 richest persons in the world, and is currently serving as the Executive chairman and CTO of Oracle.
Born in New York, Larry was raised by his mother’s aunt and uncle after she was diagnosed with pneumonia, when he was just 9 months old. Aunt Lillian and uncle Louis Ellison adopted him.
Completing his high school, Ellison got enrolled at the University of Illinois, Champaign, where he earned a recognition of the Science Student of the Year. However, Ellison dropped out of the college after his adopted mother died. Larry then joined the University of Chicago, but to soon quit his studies once again. Then, he moved to California, where he worked as a technician before he started building databases for different companies.
Laying the Foundation Stone for the Oracle Empire
When Ellison joined Amdahl as a programmer, he got hands-on experience with the 1st IBM-compatible mainframe system. Inspired by a paper on SQL by a researcher, he shifted his focus on converting SQL into a database system. Along with his two companions, in 1977, Larry founded Software Development Labs and soon got an opportunity to build a database-management system from CIA, codenamed “Oracle”. They renamed the firm to Relational Software 2 years later.
The Rise of Oracle Corporation
But, when IBM adopted Oracle in 1981 for its mainframe system, turning their fortunes and their company’s sales started doubling every year for the next 7-8 years. Wondering how this life changing twist happened!!!
After completing the CIA’s project, Ellison and his team got motivated by the results. This compelled them to launch their 1st commercially available RDMS (Relational Database Management System), which they named as Oracle Version 2. The improved data reading consistency and parallel SQL execution gave a new birth to the Oracle. Another fortunate event occurred when Oracle went public in 1986, raising millions for its owners. That was the ultimate time for the zealous young staff, which led to the successful release of version 5.1.
Unfortunately, after few years of success, the company has to face its first loss in 1990, which came as a result of immaterialized future license sales. This loss even put the company down to the edge of bankruptcy. Ellison, at this stage, proved to be proactive and regained his energy. He took charge and changed everything drastically. He started with replacing its senior staff with the most experienced managers to handle the crisis. He noticed the need of change, not only to the company but to the product also, and worked hard on the product development with his team. Within the next 2 years, new version of the database program, Oracle 7 was released which became a huge success and made Oracle the industry leader in database management software.
Time of real pride came for Ellison when America’s banks, airlines, automobile companies, and retail giants laid their dependency on Oracle’s database programs. Employees of several companies started learning to operate the software and found it easier and comfortable to use.
Oracle in Current Era
Oracle’s latest RDMS version, Oracle 12c, released in 2013, gave a new direction to the database industry. This led the company to a net income of around $10 billion by 2015, which made Ellison the 3rd richest person by Forbes.
Though, software solutions remains the prime focus of company, it started manufacturing hardware after the acquisition of Sun Microsystems in 2010. Ellison created a growth path through acquisitions over years, which made Oracle reach an approximate $185 billion market cap with over 100,000 employees by 2014.
Oracle’s New Cloud Program
While other technology companies focused on a single aspect to cloud adoption, Oracle built the entire bridge for businesses. Ellison observed the unnecessary complexity (as he termed the traditional models) of data centres and felt the need of simplification for simpler delivery of services. He focused on building complete, integrated, end-to-end solution, more advanced than from any other technology company.
Oracle Cloud emerged as the broadest and the most integrated public cloud of the industry, combining best in-class services across Software as a Service (SaaS), Platform as a Service (PaaS), and Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS).With these services, the Oracle Cloud opened a unique path for its customers to discover. The comprehensive cloud stack integrates on-premises technologies such as databases, Java, and middleware, to create a seamless customer experience that drives operational efficiencies and delivers faster innovations. Ellison has expanded his visions with his team so that the customers can have flexibility to survive in fast-changing world.
Oracle build’s integrated defensive layers are secure throughout the stack. This includes secure data centres by the company, the security professionals who manage and run cloud security, and the tools & security layers between SaaS, PaaS, and IaaS. All these things can beat any other service of the cloud.
Further, the Customer 2 Cloud Program is dedicated to remove barriers to the adoption of cloud, faced by business leaders. With flexible options to the existing ERP, ERM, Oracle CRM, and HCM customers can easily take advantage of Oracle Cloud. In addition, Cloud Express rapid start-up services as well as packaged cloud integrations help accelerate the migration to cloud, lowering costs, accelerating innovation pace, and improving user experience.
World’s 1st Autonomous Database
When Ellison discovered that Oracle is lagging far behind the market leader AWS in the cloud space, he introduced world’s first self-driving database at the Oracle Open World Keynote this year. Oracle 18c powered Autonomous Database Cloud brings complete automation for businesses to deliver unmatched performance, security, & availability, eliminating manual tuning, human labour, & human error.
Oracle claims this revolutionary database to offer 99.995% availability, interpreted as less than 30 minutes of planned/unplanned downtime. Ellison explains that the product runs in a fully automated fashion, self-provisioning and self-tuning just like his private plane’s auto-pilot feature. Larry Ellison plans to combine Oracle’s database strength with the cloud features to deliver excellent services. However, Oracle revealed the availability of this autonomous database to be near the year end.
In short, Larry Ellison is working to revolutionize the database industry despite the lack of any college education. From no specific target or direction for life to an astonishing success peak, Larry worked on to make a living by combining his genius mind & innovative ideas. After getting rich, he fulfilled his love for cars, yachts, & private jets by owning a sailing team for American Cup &a host of million-dollar properties. Not only this, he founded Ellison Medical Foundation to support research on ageing, which was later renamed to the Lawrence Ellison Foundation supporting global health, education, wildlife conservation, and development.
When Ellison discovered his talent, he didn’t have the benefits of digital platforms to promoting his idea, connecting with the right audience, and getting his business up & running. But, with the digital wave spread across every area, businesses and individuals have access to a number of platforms for various needs. All-inclusive platforms like Aileensoul offer services for individuals to fulfil their career-related needs, showcase their talent and/or abilities, and stay connected with their areas of interest. Similarly, it also helps entrepreneurs launch & promote their start-up ideas via business profile listing and networking features.
